Rescuing and Preserving Our History

DCHF

The David and Channie Hall Foundation is a non-profit organization established to manage the capital campaign for development of the HHCC. The Foundation is dedicated to preserving the historic events that led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. With your help, we can rescue and preserve this important history!

Hall Farm 2021

After his participation in the 1965 Voting Rights March, Hall lost financial support from local banks necessary to operate his farm. In 2021, 30-acres of the original farm, were reconstituted by the USDA Farm Agency, and certified by the American Tree Farm System as a sustainable tree farm. Plans are underway to reclaim Hall’s lost legacy with an environmentally sustainable crop that once dominated the Alabama landscape - Long Leaf Pine trees. Campsite 1, the voting rights landmark, is located on the 30-acre reconstituted farm. The new Farm will be the location for the HHCC, and serve as a tribute to Hall’s sacrifice.

Our Mission

Our mission is to rescue and preserve the important yet often forgotten history of the campsites and unsung heroes that served a pivotal role in the success of the 1965 Voting Rights March through the promotion of four pillars - opportunity, education, exploration, and hope.

Our Vision

We aim to serve as a vehicle of change that encourages participation and collaboration in meaningful dialogue and engagement with history and today’s struggle for voting rights.

The HHCC plans to celebrate unsung heroes like David Hall, and their critical contributions to the voting rights movement through interactive exhibitions, conference and meeting space, retreat lodging, wildlife preservation, sustainable farming, and more.

The HHCC hopes to be a vehicle for economic empowerment, community participation, education and job creation as a cultural heritage site in the Selma area. This project is intended to evolve into a civil rights pilgrimage destination and become a pivotal partner to other local museums, educational institutions, and organizations committed to authentically preserving history.
